One Kidney, Zero Compromise: A Solitary-Kidney Tumor Removed Whole

I crossed the world for this operation — and came home with my one kidney, and my health, intact.

A patient in his 70s, Southeast Asia

Condition

Tumor in a solitary kidney

The Challenge

A patient in his 70s from Southeast Asia faced one of urology's most demanding scenarios: a tumor in a solitary kidney. A decade earlier, his left kidney had been removed for cancer, leaving a single functioning kidney carrying his entire metabolic load. The new tumor sat in the renal hilum, pressed against the major renal vessels and ureter — and his age reduced his tolerance for a long operation. Any misstep could mean irreversible kidney failure and lifelong dialysis. The surgery had to remove the tumor completely while preserving every salvageable nephron.

Why Beijing United Family

His path to China began at the 2025 Asian Urology conference, where Prof. Zhu Gang of Beijing United Family Hospital presented the team's minimally invasive approaches to urologic tumors. A urologist from the patient's home country, impressed by the program's record in complex cases, recommended he travel to Beijing. The hospital assembled a multidisciplinary team spanning urology, anesthesiology, critical care, cardiology, nephrology, geriatrics, and pharmacy, and case manager Zhang Xiuli coordinated repeated reviews between the overseas physicians, the family, and the Beijing specialists.

The Procedure

Using holographic 3-D imaging, the team mapped the tumor's exact relationship to the renal artery, vein, pelvis, and ureter and rehearsed each step. The tumor was then removed with the Da Vinci robotic system. By using super-selective renal artery clamping, the surgeons interrupted only about a quarter of the kidney's blood supply and held warm-ischemia time to 17 minutes — sharply limiting the impact on kidney function. Millimeter-precise robotic dissection removed the tumor whole while sparing the healthy kidney tissue.

The Outcome

The patient recovered smoothly. His post-operative kidney function matched his pre-operative level, and his other indicators returned to normal. At follow-up he sent the team a thank-you scroll written by a renowned Chinese calligrapher — a quiet measure of the trust that carried him across the world.
