About the Hospital

Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, founded in 1958, is China's leading academic hospital for neurological and geriatric diseases, hosting the National Center for Neurological Diseases, the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, and the China International Neuroscience Institute (CHINA-INI) — a joint program with Germany's International Neuroscience Institute that has trained hundreds of international neurosurgeons since 2004.

With over 2,800 beds, 3,500 staff, 2.6 million outpatient visits, and more than 30,000 surgeries per year, the hospital combines exceptional clinical scale with deep subspecialty expertise in epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation, Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular disease, and neurodegenerative conditions.

Xuanwu established China's first neurosurgery research institute in 1960 and today operates the country's largest epilepsy surgery program, performing approximately 700 resective epilepsy operations and 200 SEEG depth-electrode implantations annually — figures rarely matched outside the world's foremost epilepsy centers. The hospital's National Geriatric Diseases Research Center leads China's national studies on Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, placing it at the frontier of both clinical neuroscience and digital health innovation.

Featured Technology & Equipment

Leksell Gamma Knife ICON

Leksell Gamma Knife ICON

Leksell Gamma Knife ICON

The world's gold-standard intracranial radiosurgery system, activated at Xuanwu in November 2021. Treats brain AVMs, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, and trigeminal neuralgia with sub-0.15 mm accuracy — no incision, no general anesthesia, no hospitalization. China's top neurology center performs some of Asia's highest volumes of Gamma Knife radiosurgery for complex intracranial lesions.

Intraoperative MRI (iMRI) Neurosurgical Suite

Intraoperative MRI (iMRI) Neurosurgical Suite

Intraoperative MRI (iMRI) Neurosurgical Suite

Real-time MRI imaging during brain tumor resection allows surgeons to visualize remaining tumor tissue before closing — increasing complete resection rates by up to 35% compared to conventional surgery. Essential for glioma, pituitary adenoma, and cavernous malformation surgery where millimeter decisions determine functional outcomes.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program

China's premier DBS center for Parkinson's disease, dystonia, essential tremor, and drug-resistant epilepsy (ANT-DBS). The functional neurosurgery team uses stereotactic robot targeting and intraoperative neurophysiology monitoring, achieving electrode placement accuracy below 1.5 mm. International Parkinson's patients typically achieve significant motor improvement within days of device activation.
