About the Hospital

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC), founded in 1964 as one of China's four earliest dedicated tumor hospitals, is the largest integrated cancer center in South China and ranks among the top three oncology hospitals nationally in the National Rankings.

With 1,488 ward beds, 35 clinical departments, and over one million outpatient visits recorded annually, SYSUCC manages the world's single largest volume of nasopharyngeal carcinoma — a cancer highly prevalent in southern China and Southeast Asia — and holds the world's largest biobank of NPC specimens.

The center's researchers have authored or co-authored the international clinical guidelines for nasopharyngeal carcinoma published by NCCN, ESMO, and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, and since 2019 more than 70 of its clinical research findings have been adopted into international treatment guidelines across multiple cancer types. SYSUCC also operates South China's first simultaneous PET-MR system and a total-body PET-CT scanner, placing it among the most technologically advanced oncology imaging centers in Asia.

Proton Therapy System

A clinical proton therapy system delivers Bragg-peak-targeted radiation to tumors adjacent to critical structures — brain, spine, eye, pediatric cancers — with zero exit dose, reducing long-term toxicity and secondary cancer risk versus conventional photon radiotherapy.
