About the Hospital

Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and originally established in 1904, is globally recognized as the birthplace of clinical limb replantation: in 1963, Professors Chen Zhongwei and Qian Yunqing performed the world's first successful complete digit replantation here, founding the discipline of clinical microsurgery.

Today the hospital holds 2,556 licensed beds, serves nearly 5.9 million outpatient and emergency visits annually, and performs over 154,000 surgeries per year, with its Department of Hand and Reconstructive Surgery performing more than 2,700 replantation procedures each year at a success rate exceeding 97%.

The hospital is also home to a National Metabolic Disease (Diabetes) Clinical Medical Research Center running one of China's largest diabetes cohorts, and in 2022 received approval to establish a National Center for Orthopedics. With six national clinical key specialties spanning orthopedics, endocrinology and metabolism, and otolaryngology, and a heritage as a global pioneer in microsurgical reconstruction, it remains one of China's most technically distinguished specialty hospitals.
