About the Hospital
Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, affiliated with Tongji University and founded in 1933, is the world's largest minimally invasive thoracic surgery center by patient volume, having performed more than 75,000 single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic surgeries (uniportal VATS) — the highest cumulative total at any single hospital globally.
The hospital performs approximately 10,000 surgeries annually, of which around 7,000 are lung cancer operations, and its thoracic surgeons carry out 40 to 50 procedures daily within a 30,000+ procedure-per-year program.
Designated a National Lung Cancer Regional Medical Center, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital pioneered the uniportal VATS technique in China and has trained over 2,000 thoracic surgeons including more than 300 foreign physicians, making it a global training destination for the specialty. The hospital's lung transplantation program is among the highest-volume in mainland China, and it is internationally recognized as the leading center for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis surgical resection.

Featured Technology & Equipment
Da Vinci Xi Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS)

Da Vinci Xi Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS)
Performs uniportal three-arm robotic anatomic lung resections — including complex sleeve lobectomies and carinal resections — through a single small incision, achieving blood loss and hospital stays significantly lower than conventional VATS.
Uniportal Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Program
Uniportal Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Program
A global training destination for single-port VATS, the hospital performs 30,000+ thoracic procedures annually including complex segmentectomies and sleeve resections through a 2–3 cm incision, with an average hospital stay of 3.73 days.
Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB)

Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB)
GPS-like navigation guides a bronchoscope through the airways to peripheral lung nodules too small for standard bronchoscopy biopsy, enabling early lung cancer diagnosis and presurgical marking without CT-guided needle puncture.
