Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and founded in 1844, is the oldest Western medicine hospital in Shanghai and one of China's most storied academic medical centers, ranking in the national top-20 tier in overall hospital reputation assessments.

Operating across four campuses (East, West, South, and North) with approximately 2,750 beds and 13 national clinical key specialties, it is most distinguished for its gastroenterology program — ranked first nationally in the National Rankings — and for its world-record pediatric liver transplantation center, which has performed over 4,000 pediatric liver transplants including cases on children from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mongolia, achieving a ten-year pediatric survival rate exceeding 90%.

The hospital co-hosts the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Digestive System Diseases alongside Naval Medical University, and participates in the National Liver Cancer Science Center. In 2023, anesthesia operations at Renji exceeded 210,000 cases, ranking first in Shanghai, reflecting the scale and complexity of its surgical program.
